What motivates a person to join a group or an organization?

I suppose there are a number of reasons why people join a certain group – for some it can be about expanding their network or the opportunity to meet and make contact with other people with interests similar as theirs; or for brotherhood, exposure, growth or it can be an opportunity to meet great people and have a lot of fun. Suffice it to say that the factors as to why people join groups can be as numerous as the stars. However, when you make the decision to join a group, you should make sure that you have a clear understanding of what you would like to gain from the group.

Last Saturday to Sunday, June 25-26, I had the opportunity to join Rotaract Club of Cebu South in their annual Orientation, Planning and Acceptance program. The activity was held at Carmen, Cebu City and ‘twas attended by the “seasoned” (I don’t want to use the term old hehehe) members of the organization. The event gave the new members, including me, an overview and some overall insights about the organization – how it operates, benefits of joining the group, its values, direction, projects and campaigns, etc. The club’s goals are promising and it gives me excitement and much enthusiasm to be involved in its future projects and initiatives.

In hindsight, the driving force that motivated me to join the Rotaract particularly with Cebu South is the fact that I can see myself to be working with the organization’s direction and goals. After all, we have to understand that the organizations that you are in are also reflections of your character. With this, am proud to say that I am now a Rotaractor!
